2026 Secil Civil Engineering Award
July, 2026
The 2026 Secil Civil Engineering Award was given to the work developed by A2P Estudos e Projetos on the Duarte Pacheco Viaduct, a project coordinated by Eng. Júlio Appleton and Eng. António Costa.
Inaugurated in 1944, the Duarte Pacheco Viaduct holds a length of 355 meters, divided into five reinforced concrete substructures. The central arch, one of its most iconic elements, consists of two twin arches with a 91.80-meter span and a 32.70-meter rise. The 2024 intervention focused on seismic reinforcement and represented the culmination of decades of work in the field of durability, rehabilitation, and seismic reinforcement of structures, as well as in the study and analysis of this particular structure.
Success in a project of this complexity is only possible through the cooperation of different teams across their different areas of expertise. In that sense, the award inevitably extends to everyone involved in this process, with special recognition to the general contractor, Teixeira Duarte – Engenharia e Construções, and to the project owner, Infraestruturas de Portugal.
We also believe that awarding a prize of this significance to a rehabilitation project is a sign of the importance of preserving, understanding, and rehabilitating not only infrastructure, but all of our built heritage.
For over more than 35 years of history, A2P has had the privilege of taking part in award-winning projects. These distinctions make us proud, but they also reinforce our sense of responsibility for the impact of our work.
