2026 Bridges in Portugal – A Tribute to Edgar Cardoso

On the occasion of the June 2026 fib Congress in Lisbon, we have prepared an exhibition at the Museum of the Civil Engineering Department of IST – Instituto Superior Técnico about Portuguese bridges, their history and construction.

The exhibition includes models, photographs, drawings, books, medals, and films documenting construction works, namely the Arrábida Bridge over the River Douro (1959–1963).

The selection of bridges and documents is based on the objects collected by Júlio Appleton throughout his professional career. It does not include all the main bridges, nor does it reference all the distinguished engineers of the 20th century in Portugal.

However, it would not be fair not to highlight Edgar Cardoso, a professor at IST and the author of several projects presented in the exhibition.
