Description:
The building was designed and built in the mid-nineteenth century and, is heavily influenced by the "Italian" theater style. The building began in April 1881 and ended in June 1892. Over the years the building had to face different changes that modified its original image, but that were expected once these changes also worked for cinema. The designs of the main facade and of some fragments of the sides have been profoundly changed and interior elements have been damaged over time. In March 1978 the Municipality of Évora began the recovery process, given the state of the property. The building had several deficiencies and some of them were related with deficiencies of the original project.
Main pathologies:
Roof trusses and timber elements floor with fungi and insects. Excessive deformation of the roof trusses. Deterioration and aging of floor coverings. Lack of protection of timber elements against fire risks.
Main interventions:
Reconstruction of dormers and roof skylight windows, introduction of an inner lining of plaster sheets and installation of thermal insulation protected with waterproof tissue.
Introduction of reinforcement bars in areas of load suspension in the roof structure.
Repair and reinforcement of the roof timber elements adding epoxy resin; reinforcing links introducing stainless steel rod.
Strengthening the truss line by placing a sleeve - steel clamp.
Replacing the existing timber floor covering with new timber strips in maritime pine.
Preservative treatment of timber against insects and fungi action, injecting metal salts.
Enhancement of fire safety with intumescent paints and fire retardants varnishes.
