S. Luiz Theater

Description:
The original building was built in the late nineteenth century, and got through some interventions over the past century. The conversion and rehabilitation of the Municipal Theatre of St. Luiz, aimed to increase the degree of functionality, safety and comfort of this showroom that serves many purposes. The main structure consists of stone masonry walls, in average 1.00 m thick, and height varying between 15 m and 25 m. These walls enclose three main bodies, including the stage, the audience room and the building entrance. The latter has several storeys. The main entrance is on the ground floor and in the upper floors are the first balcony foyer and also access to second balcony. The body of the stage encloses not only the stage but also the first and second balcony. And, on top, stands the old stage structure. In this specific body was located the old concrete structure of the dressing rooms, which occupied the entire width of the Theatre (22 m) x 4.50 m deep x 25 m height.
Main pathologies:
Structure elements unable to resist building renovation, namely foundations, columns and beams. Timber elements attacked by fungi and insects.
Main interventions:
Steel base angles and anchors to reinforce columns.

Using carbon composites to strengthen concrete beams.

New composites slabs.

Execution of a new stage structure to suspend steel scenic elements.

Replacement of timber elements by massive timber or glued laminated timber.

Achievement of two basements and underpinning existing walls using micro-piles.

Installing a water tank for fire attract.
Recovery of steel roofs and existing stairs.
