Monserrate Palace roof

Description:
Maintenance and rehabilitation works were intended to give the Palace a healthy constructive environment, so that the degradation process could be stopped. The intervention focused on roofs, exterior walls and exterior frames, involving structural and non structural actions. The recovering of the kitchens timber floors with iron and masonry slabs had also been initiated in a lesser degree. Traditional materials and building techniques have been used, namely timber, lime and oil paints. It also has been decided to improve the performance of the roofs regarding water penetration and against fire as well as increasing the durability of timber elements, using contemporary materials.
Main pathologies:
Timber roof quite damaged by fungi and insects and inadequate support of trusses on walls. Degradation over time of exterior coatings, metal and timber components paint systems and roofs coating with iron plate. Thin wooden partitions damaged by rotted structure. Cracks in façade stone. Poor drainage system for rainwater.
Main interventions:
Recovery of roofs, including plate coating or lead plaque and timber structures.
Rehabilitation of iron, steel and other metals ancillary pieces of iron that strengthen the connection between structural elements of timber.
Rehabilitation of external walls coatings by plaster and lime mortar local removal and replacement.
Cleaning and repair of stone elements.
General recovery of the timber elements with no structural function and widespread replacement of lead, timber and iron coatings paint systems.
Recovery of flat roof by a Roman tile roof.
General repair of the rainwater drainage system.
