Description:
The Studio Carlos Relvas has been built in the late nineteenth century by amateur photographer Carlos Relvas and it was adapted, a few years later to become also home of its owner. This unique example of iron and glass architecture suffered a slow process of degradation and agony which was finally stopped by a restoration and rehabilitation process that re-establish it to its original and unique state of photo studio. The detailed diagnostic study of the building in parallel with the care that the rehabilitation projects were undertaken, remaining throughout the work, the same spirit of research and discovery, with what was possible to see resurgence the studio in its entire splendor.
Main pathologies:
Cracked walls. Timber elements with fungi and insects. Deficient rainwater drainage. Degradation of timber, glass and iron covering elements. used over time. Lack of protection of metal and timber structures against fire hazards.
Main interventions:
Repair of cracking in existing walls.
Eliminate sources of moisture.
Repair plaster ceiling damaged by moisture.
Replacement of roof damaged timber elements with new pieces in pine stabilized and impregnated with metal salts.
Recovery of the original cast iron structure, with performance parts sunk according to the traditional method of casting and finishing with oil paint on intumescent paint.
Overall recovery and restoration of timber, glass and iron decorative elements.
